Quick Shutdown Update

I finally got a chance to try the keyboard shutdown command on a Vista operating system. I found that I had to go one more step - I had to click on "Enter". So it went like this:

Windows Key then
press right arrow 3 times
then press Enter

I don't know if there are variations from on Vista to another. You might want to try this to see if it works on your computer before writing it down and storing it away.

Here's hoping you never need it! :-)

Good Morning Tina,
Thank you for stopping by for a vivit and leaving a comment.

This is good information to know. We upgraded to the Vista and to be honest with you we have had fewer problems with it than we did the XP. The XP was about a month over
1 year old and we had to have someone come in and do a complete format of the hard drive.

Drop by for a visit any time. My door id always open and there is usually coffee in the pot.

I’m adding this info to my new Dell 1720 journal along with all the other info I’m learning as I set my my new computer … running with Vista. So far I actually like many features the new operating system, though I’m still looking for how to do some familiar operations. It’s all good for my exercising my brain however. Thanks again for allowing us to benefit from your experience.

Hi Tina,

I've been thinking to upgrading to Vista soon. I have had no problems with XP in the past 4 years, knock on wood! I will store this information though. Thank you!

Have a great day, my friend.

Hugs,

Renie

I'm going to write this down too. I have so much trouble with Vista. Thanks for the great information!

Thanks for the update, Tina. I'll test this on my Mom's computer, she's running Vista. I'm still with XP.

.......I love XP! And all the updates too!!!

Michele,

No, I'm not crazy about Vista, either. I still need to disable a couple of the "features" that drive me crazy. For instance, the blocked programs message that appears on startup and then every 15 minutes or so and the permission to continue with a program that I initiated. Vista is so loaded up with trial programs it makes me want to scream!!

I think XP 2 is a much better operating system. If they took the stupid programs like the two I mentioned and the trial programs out, it would be a big improvement. As it is now, the best thing about Vista is watching the MAC commercials. I have to laugh because I know they are absolutely true. LOL

Tina

Storyteller,

I think - I hope, that Microsoft cleaned Vista up during the past few months. I would be curious to know what you consider the pros and cons of this operating system. I have been wondering if Microsoft made any improvements - especially after Apple started airing their commercials comparing Vista to a Mac!

Tina

Renie,

You might want to consider finding out from new Vista owners how they like Vista before you switch. Old Vista owners have not been happy. Many switched back to XP after a few frustrating months with Vista. As I mentioned to Storyteller, I wonder if they have fixed the annoyances they built into it. If they have, it may be worth the upgrade. Of course, Microsoft will force an upgrade when they decide to no longer support the XP platforms. But I think there is still plenty of time.

hugs,
Tina

Alice,

Thank you. How long have you had your Vista system? I'm just curious because as I mentioned to some of the previous posters, I wonder if they have fixed the problems with Vista. If you got yours recently, then I guess the answer would be that they have not fixed it.

Deborah,

I love XP since they updated the first version. As far as I can see, it is easier to use and more reliable than Vista. How does your mother like Vista? When did she buy it? I've been trying to figure out if they have fixed Vista since the first release. :-)

Tina,

I have put off getting a new computer because they all have Vista in them and all the people I've talked to say that XP is a much better operating system. I'm just not anxious to try it. I usually wait until Michelle gets a new operating system before I get one. Then I can call her if I have problems.

Take care, my friend.
Blessings,
Mary

I'm on a Mac, so mine would be different. But I'm sure all your Pc pals will be happy for this info.

I can do a force-quit on my Mac. Right from the dock. But I think I should ask a Mac-using friend, about a total keyboard one. Thanks for the reminder.

Thank you, Nonna! I hope you have a great weekend, too! :-)

'Miss' Mari-Nanci,

I never thought about how it would work on a Mac. Is forcing a shut down on a Mac bad for the hard drive as it is on a pc?

Have a great weekend!

I was trying to wait until they worked the bugs out of Vista, but when my old laptop started messing up I just decided to go for it. So far I'm okay with the way Vista works. It's enough like XP that I can figure out how to do most things and there are some new features I really like a whole bunch already. At the start menu there's a search bar (much like Google's) so it's quicker and easier to find things on the computer itself than it was using the SEARCH function in XP. The thing I like BEST so far (other than the SPEED of things) is the way the 'task bar' at the top of the page has the whole path with drop down menus between levels making it simpler to navigate from place to place without using the 'back' button. It's all very 'kewl' ;--)

I removed a bunch of the 'trial programs' immediately to free up memory (not that I was short on that with 4GB of RAM & a 320GB hard drive). I don't get any 'blocked programs messages at all so I'm wondering if that's a 'setting' you've somehow enabled ... or if it's part of a Security Program you're running. I'm sure it's a simple fix if you call Dell Tech Support. I find those technicians are most helpful with 'trouble-shooting' such glitches. I hope you get things sorted out quickly.

Storyteller,

I'm glad that your experience is a good one with Vista! It sounds like they have fixed a lot of the problems. The blocked programs is a default on my version. There is a fix, I just need to look it up and fix it! LOL

Thank you for sharing this update!
