My Lucky Day & the Downy Woodpecker

Yesterday, this little guy was at the suet feeder that hangs from the oak tree in the front yard. Usually, the least little noise makes the downy woodpeckers fly away. I opened the front door before I realized he was there. He didn't seem to notice. So I got my camera. My next problem was the storm door, which makes noise when it opens. I slowly opened it, holding my breath with each squeak. Since the feeder is directly across the walkway from the front door, I had to hold the door open with my foot to attempt a shot. It was then that I realized the afternoon sun made it almost impossible to see in the little camera screen. I took many shots in the hopes that some of them would be good ones. I couldn't believe that he stayed there. He was happy eating the suet and I was happy I got a couple of good photos. I'd say it was my lucky day!!

Hey great shot of the chickadee.
let me tell you of something my BH and I used to go and do on Sundays. We used to go and hand feed the chickadees in a park in Breaksville Oh.The park is part of our Metroparks system.and way during the months of January and Febuary, they would thak down the feeders on saturday evening and then on sunday people could come and handfeed the chickadees.Thaat was fun.One time a chickadee landed on the better Halfs head and satthere quite a while before landing on here hand to take some of the bird seed. I jus wished I had my camera there to take a pic of that it was so neat.

Mike,

That would have been a terrific photo! The chickadees seem to be more adapted to people than a lot of birds. I read that chickadees can be taught to land in a person's hand by first putting seed in a glove and putting the glove on a porch railing. Once they get used to that, the person puts the glove on. Once the chickadees start landing in the glove, the person starts holding a hand filled with seed out and the chickadees land. It seems really neat.

This is a downy woodpecker. I just realized that I didn't identify him in the post. I will have to fix that.

I wanted to let you know that I saw your comment on my Irish Greeting. I answered, but then today, when I went to make my bird post - the Irish Greeting moved down the list. I intended to keep it on top. Finally, I realized I needed to do it a different way. So I deleted the entire post and redid it not realizing that I would be wiping out the comment you made. I appreciate your comment. And in honor of that, I'm signing off with an Irish "cheers"!

Slainte,
Tina

Love the shot of the downy, Tina. I have them here along with the hairy's (probably spelled wrong) and all sorts of other woodpeckers. I have found that the little downy's get so engrosed in eating, that they are not afraid when I come out and am even refilling the feeders.

I enjoyed your great shot of the
downy. I'll have to try and take some bird pictures as well, soon.

Have a great day!

Renie

PS. For some strange reason, I'm having a hard time posting here lately. I tried several times last night, but gave up after a while.

Tina,

A beautiful photo. I'm glad you got a few good ones. It's hard to get good photos when the sun is shining toward the camera. I found that when I was in Florida and there was no choice but to take some shots facing the sun.

Take care. Still feeling really tired.

Blessings,
Mary

Hi Renie,

Sorry for the long delay in responding. I was offline again.

It's wonderful that you can get so close to the downys. I bet you could get some super pictures! We have hairys, too. Other than those the only woodpeckers I see are the pileated, flickers, and rarely - a sapsucker. Woodpeckers are so much fun to watch.

Thank you for your kind words and visit. I'm always delighted when you stop by! :-)

Hugs,
Tina
