Chipmunk Playing Statues

Dave and I were birdwatching on the deck early one morning. Oscar sniffed around the edges and investigated the new package of potting soil under the hammock. I noticed a chipmunk standing in the walkway. I wanted a picture, but was afraid it would scamper off before I could reach for the camera. Slowly and steadily I picked up the camera, turned it on, and adjusted the zoom. Much to my surprise, the little fella never moved. He remained standing like a statue for at least five more minutes before turning around and racing off into the bushes. Then it dawned on me. My little hound neither saw nor sniffed out the chipmunk, but the chipmunk spotted him. His little game of statues worked. Oscar didn't see him until he was well on his way to safety!

What a cute little guy. I haven't seen any Chipmunks here but we do have squirrels. They are fun to watch too.

I think your little Chipmunk was very brave, or maybe he was so scared he couldn't move! LOL

Thank you, Nonna!

Bev, I think that could be it - he was too scared to move. He was absolutely motionless for several minutes! But once he started moving, he was very quick! LOL

Tina,

Squirrels and chipmunks are so funny - they play all day in both my front yard and back yard. Now I have a few wild rabbits hanging out around my birdfeeders.

This pic is cute, I've seen squirrels/chipmunks stand still like that too. I think it's instinct, to fool their enemies - or an undesired playmate - in this case, Oscar!

My son had lots of chipmunks in his yard. His cat loves to lay by the back door and watch them. Yesterday I saw a large groundhog sitting beside the road. I haven't seen one of those for a long time.

Thank you, all for your wonderful comments! I'm sorry I have fallen behind in my blogging. "Bad weather, bad monitor, good husband's hand surgery" have slowed me down. Things are back to normal (I can't be too sure of the weather, but then, this New England! LOL). I appreciate your comments and will visit soon! Thank you.
hugs,
Tina

Hi Tina,

The little chippy is so cute! Good capture. I see lots of them around here as well, and have also seen them stand still like that.

I hope your husband's hand is doing well.

Take care, and have a great Sunday!

Hugs,

Renie
